There used
to be a time when it was a slim crowd that knew of, and played, poker. The game
was played with fewer cards and simpler rules, but it was still poker and I
want to take the opportunity to give the story of poker a little light.
Today
pretty much everyone knows what poker is and you rarely meet someone that
hasn’t played it. You can find poker in all countries, in all ages and all
classes of society. It is on the Internet, on TV and to make a living out of
your poker playing is for many people no longer just a dream.
The card
game has supporters everywhere. That is also clear when you look at the average
poker player; he will be well educated in strategies, rules, techniques and
terminology. Poker has its own slang, a language that might take years to learn
fully but still is a very fun register of expressions, comparisons and phrases.
But not
everyone is happy about the fast development of the poker culture. There are
many parents concerned about their children’s gambling and there are people
that suggest that poker is a hazardous entrance to a world of bad business. It
is true that if you can’t control your gambling then you risk winding up in
dept, maybe even to the wrong people.
I advise
for each end every poker player to stay updated with what is happening in the
poker society, both online and IRL. There are many way to study it; like
reading poker magazines, blogs about poker, forums. There are even radio
stations that have poker as their speciality! Here you can read about what to
do and what not to do, who is performing bad or good, what is happening where…
Naturally,
since the Internet entered the picture a lot of things have changed in the
business. Since that makes poker even more accessible poker have gone down the
ages quite a lot. Actually a couple of the best players in the world are just
teenagers. Hopefully this is inspiring and not off-putting to older poker
players.
I think
that the most important thing to be successful is to remember to enjoy the
game, and not just do it for the money or the glory of winning. It is hard to
improve your game if you don’t enjoy it.
